8 Winter Care Tips for your Concrete Floor

Concrete is durable, but it’s not indestructible. During winter, moisture from rain, snow or ice can seep into tiny cracks and pores on the surface. When temperatures drop, this moisture freezes, expands, and creates cracks, spalling, or other structural damage. De-icing chemicals can even make matters worse! So how do you prevent damage?

In this post, we’ll explore practical tips to help you protect your concrete floors in winter (whether indoors or outdoors), so your flooring remains safe and functional all season long. Let’s dive in!

Seal Your Concrete Floors Before Winter

One of the best ways to protect your concrete floor in winter is to apply a high-quality concrete sealant. Sealants act as a shield, preventing water and de-icing chemicals from seeping into the pores of the concrete. 

This is especially crucial for outdoor areas like yards or airport aprons, where freeze-thaw cycles are common. 

For internal concrete floors, such as warehouses, sealing not only prevents your floor from frost-induced cracking, but also makes them easier to clean. 

Before winter begins, inspect any areas that may have been sealed before for signs of wear or damage (particularly high-traffic areas), and reapply sealant as necessary. Note that most sealants will keep your concrete floor sealed for 4 to 5 years.

If you’re unsure whether your floors need sealing, here’s a quick trick: pour a bit of water onto the surface and watch what happens. If the water sits on the surface without soaking in, this means your floor is sealed and protected. But if it soaks in quickly, it’s a sign that your concrete floor could use a seal to keep moisture out and prevent cracks down the line.

Control Moisture Indoors and Outdoors

As we’ve established, water is the enemy in winter! Luckily, there are a number of ways to reduce the amount of water that gets to your concrete floor. 

Indoors, placing mats or rugs by entryways can help to catch snow and rain brought in by workers’ boots. 

Outside, good drainage will stop water from pooling and creating large or deep ice patches. Make sure drains and gutters are clear to avoid any blockage.

Whether inside or outside, it’s important to deal with standing water quickly: sweeping with a mop or using a floor dryer can go a long way in preventing damage.

Avoid Chemicals and Focus on Traction

Though it’s a little known fact, de-icing salts, while they’re efficient in getting rid of ice and snow, can degrade concrete surfaces over time. If possible, it’s best to avoid using chemicals directly on concrete, particularly on older or untreated surfaces. 

Instead, consider using alternatives such as sand or gravel. These will provide good traction without causing damage to your concrete.

Wash Away Chemicals and Clean Regularly

If you do need to use chemicals to remove ice or snow from your concrete floor, we would advise washing your floor at the earliest opportunity after use, to prevent the products from wearing down the surface of the concrete.

It’s a good idea to pressure wash your outdoor concrete areas periodically anyway, to remove road salts and grime picked up by vehicles and workers’ boots, as they can corrode the surface. Indoors, regular sweeping or vacuuming also helps to prevent scratches and surface degradation.

Repair Small Cracks Before They Get Worse

Addressing minor damage early is essential to preventing bigger problems later. 

Inspect your concrete floors frequently for cracks, chips, or uneven surfaces, particularly in high-traffic areas like warehouses or airport runways. 

Small cracks can usually be repaired easily and quickly: in fact, repaired areas can usually be reopened to traffic on the same day. However, more extensive damage will require more work and cause longer downtime.

Maintain Stable Indoor Temperatures

Temperature fluctuations can cause thermal stress on concrete, leading to cracks and other structural issues. 

Maintaining stable indoor temperatures helps to reduce this risk. Make sure your heating system is functioning properly to provide a consistent environment. For areas with floor heating, it’s best to keep the system running continuously on a low setting, rather than cycling it on and off, which can contribute to uneven expansion and contraction.

Only De-Ice If You Need To

Think carefully before de-icing your concrete floor. Using chemicals, salt, or scraping with a shovel can sometimes cause more damage to your concrete than simply leaving the ice.

So, ask yourself: do I really need to de-ice this area? Is it absolutely essential for business? Or could I wait for it to melt naturally?

If it’s a must for safety or operations, go ahead. But if you can avoid using the area for a while, your concrete will thank you in the long run!

Use Plastic Shovels Instead of Metal

If you’re going to use a shovel to remove snow or ice, it’s worth looking into proper snow and ice removal techniques. 

For example, it’s always best to use plastic shovels as opposed to metal, as plastic won’t be so harsh on the concrete surface.

Always avoid using excessive force to chip away at ice, and don’t be tempted to use ice picks.

If you use a snow removal company, you can ask them if they have a brush attachment instead of a plough blade, which will also prevent scratches and reduce the potential of damage over time.
