We specialise in internal slabs installation (to TR34 specs,) external slabs (TR66), and upper floors and mezzanines (TR75). We also work with Pavement Quality concrete for high-durability surfaces. Each floor we install is tailored to handle specific operational demands.
The honest answer is: it depends! While installations usually take a couple of days on average, there are a number of factors that can affect timescales. For example: what prep work is involved? Is reinforcement required? Do we need to trim the existing ground?
This is why site visits are so important: only once we’ve seen and understand your site can we accurately quote and provide a realistic estimate of how long the work will take.
Concrete typically takes 24 to 48 hours to dry, at which point it’s safe for normal foot traffic. After one week, concrete is usually cured enough to handle heavy machinery traffic, such as forklifts. It is widely agreed that concrete reaches full strength 28 days after pouring.

Once a new concrete floor is installed and fully dried, we carry out a basic polish to give it a clean and tidy finish. We do this as standard with each new installation.
However, this is different from our more thorough “grind and polish” service, which creates a smooth, high-shine concrete floor.
Whilst ‘flat’ and ‘level’ are often used interchangeably, a flat floor isn’t necessarily level, and a level floor isn’t necessarily flat!
- Flatness (Property F) refers to the change in elevation between two consecutive measurements taken over a 30cm distance. It’s all about ensuring there are no sudden bumps or dips over short distances, which is particularly important when using machinery like forklifts.
- Levelness (Property E), on the other hand, measures the difference in elevation between two opposing points that are 3 metres apart, within a 3m x 3m grid. This ensures that there are no gradual slopes across the floor, but it doesn’t guarantee the surface is completely flat.
Both are important, but levelness affects the overall slope, while flatness affects how smooth the surface is in small sections.
At MKZ, we lay all internal slabs in accordance with the TR34 (4th edition) specification, which sets the standards for floor flatness, levelness, and durability in free movement areas. Internal slabs can be laid to four different flatness classes: FM1, FM2, FM3, and FM4, with FM1 being the flattest:
- FM1: For very high standards of flatness and levelness, typically where reach trucks operate at above 13m without side-shift.
- FM2: Suitable for reach trucks operating at 8-13m without side-shift.
- FM3: Used for retail floors with reach trucks operating at up to 8m without side-shift, or up to 13m with side-shift.
- FM4: Ideal for retail floors, workshops or manufacturing facilities where Material Handling Equipment (MHE) lift heights are restricted to 4m.
If an existing floor is uneven, it may require grinding, resurfacing, or reinstallation depending on the extent of the issue. We can assess and recommend the best approach.
We always adhere to TR66, the recognised industry standard for external in-situ concrete paving, which aligns with the broader BS 8500 standard for concrete specifications. This ensures that our slabs are durable, weather-resistant, and suitable for high-traffic areas such as warehouses, yards, and loading bays.
For upper floors and mezzanines, we follow TR75, which builds on the guidance of BS 8500 and covers composite concrete slabs with steel decking. This ensures that the structure meets the highest standards for strength, durability, and long-lasting performance.
